Friday night, Gabe and I went to see An American Carol. We had to travel an hour to do it, but we wanted to support a film with an actual conservative theme. (You know, there haven't been too many of those!) Besides we like the drive.
We thought the movie was both hilariously funny and, at times, poignant. Basically, it is about a sarcastic, unpatriotic documentary filmmaker who wants to abolish the Fourth of July holiday. But, then he is visited by Dickens-type spirits who show him around the past, present, and future and he, of course, has a change of heart.
It is directed by David Zucker, of Airplane and the Naked Gun series fame. Also "narrated" by Leslie Nielson. So, you know there is definitely same slapstick, crazy, silly-type of humor.
There is also a lot of violence. The fake kind. Not the gory kind. You know, the someone-is-blown-up-and-there's-nothing-left kind. But, it is still people being killed. A little too much, for my taste. So, beware.
Also beware, if you are of the liberal inclination (you think Al Gore deserved the Nobel Peace Prize and Michael Moore tells the truth), you will NOT like this movie. I'm serious. You won't. You might get a few laughs out of it, but you won't "get" it.
There are an amazing amount of recognizable faces. An American Carol stars include Kelsey Grammer, Leslie Nielson, Trace Adkins, James Woods, Robert Davi, Geoffrey Arend, Serdar Kalsin, Jon Voight, Dennis Hopper and Kevin P. Farley. Even Paris Hilton shows up!
Sounds like FUN!
